Privacy Policy
Your practice stays yours.
Last updated: 5 October 2026 (EdgeLingo 2.1.3 for iPhone, 0.3.1 for Android)
Who we are
EdgeLingo (the "App") is developed by EdgeLingo ("we", "us"), a one-person studio in Taiwan. You can reach us at [email protected].
At a glance
- Your voice recordings — stay on your device. Only if you turn on pronunciation scores is the line you shadow sent to be scored, and it is not kept.
- Your photos — stay on your device, unless Cloud AI is on and you agree to send one to build a scenario from it (not stored).
- Your transcripts, saved phrases and history — stored only on your device.
- Conversation text, with Cloud AI on — sent for processing, not stored by us.
- With Cloud AI or pronunciation scores on, a scrambled code made from your purchase — it can't be turned back into the original, is kept only with that day's usage, and is deleted automatically within 3 days.
- Feedback you send — your message, any screenshots you attach and, only if you give it, your email address. Sent to us only when you tap Send.
- Android free trial — a scrambled code made from your device's ID, used only to count the trial allowance and deleted after 90 days.
- With iCloud sync on — a copy of your history and settings is kept in your own iCloud account, which we can't access.
Data we collect
With Cloud AI off (the default): none. EdgeLingo has no user accounts and uses no analytics, no advertising and no third-party trackers. We do not build a profile of you, and we cannot see your conversations, recordings or photos.
With Cloud AI or pronunciation scores on, we process the text, any photo you agree to send and, for pronunciation scores, the line you shadow, as described in those sections below, only to answer each request; we keep only a daily usage count, plus daily totals for each server region that identify no one, as described there. If you use the Android app's free trial, we also keep a scrambled code made from your device's ID with its trial usage (see “The Android app”).
If you send us feedback, we receive what you send (see “Feedback” below) and use it only to understand and answer it.
What stays on your device
Everything you create in the App is stored only on your device, and never leaves it, except what Cloud AI or pronunciation scores send to answer a request if you turn them on (see below), or when you choose to export or share it. This includes:
- Your voice recordings, conversation transcripts and practice history
- Custom scenarios you create (including any photo you attach)
- Your saved phrase ("chunk") bank
- Your app settings (such as your chosen languages and voices)
You can delete this data at any time from the App's Settings, or by deleting the App, which removes all of it. You can also export it as a file to keep your own copy.
If you turn on iCloud sync, a copy of this data is also kept in your own iCloud account (see “iCloud sync” below).
How the AI, speech, and camera work
- Microphone — used only while you practice speaking. Your speech is converted to text on your device, and recordings stay on it — unless you turn on pronunciation scores, which send the line you shadow to be scored (see “Pronunciation scores” below).
- Camera & Photos — optional, used only when you create a scenario from a photo. The photo is analyzed on your device; if Cloud AI is on and you agree, it is sent once to the cloud AI to understand the scene (see below).
- Voice — the text-to-speech voices run on your device.
- AI conversation — by default the language model runs on your device. If you turn on Cloud AI, the text requests described below are answered in the cloud instead.
Cloud AI (optional)
Cloud AI is off by default. You can turn it on from the EdgeLingo 2.0 welcome screen or in Settings → Cloud AI, and turn it off in Settings at any time. When it is on:
- What is sent: the text needed for each request — the conversation you are having (your words as transcribed on your device, and the AI's replies), the scenario's instructions, and the text of the other AI features you use, such as hints, corrections, goal checks, the review after a conversation, phrase extraction, and creating a custom scenario. If you create a scenario from a photo, we ask you each time. If you agree, the photo itself is sent — made smaller, and with its location and camera details removed — so the AI can understand the scene. If you choose "Send text only", the photo stays on your device, and only the text EdgeLingo reads from it on your device, with a rough label for the scene, is sent.
- What is never sent: audio (pronunciation scores are a separate option, below), photos you haven't agreed to send, your saved history as a whole, your name, email or any account details.
- How we check that you bought the app: each request comes with a receipt that Apple signs to show you bought EdgeLingo. It holds a code that belongs only to your Apple Account and this app, plus the purchase date and the app version — never your name or email. After checking that Apple really signed it, we keep only a scrambled version of that code that can't be turned back into the original, together with how much you used Cloud AI that day, so we can apply the daily fair-use limit. This record is deleted automatically within 3 days, and we don't keep the receipt itself. The Android app uses Google Play's purchase record instead (see “The Android app”).
- Where it goes: your request goes to our server nearest you (in Taiwan, Belgium, the United States, Australia or Singapore), which passes the text (and any photo you agreed to send) to Google's Gemini model and sends the reply back to you. Google may handle the request in one of its data centers outside your region.
- What we keep: we don't keep or record the text or photos you send, or the replies. Our server logs only note things like the time, the kind of request, whether it worked, how long the text was and how long it took, and they are deleted after 30 days. We don't keep your IP address. We also keep daily totals for each server region — how many requests of each kind, how much text and what it cost, and how many people used Cloud AI that day — with nothing that identifies anyone; these totals are deleted after 90 days.
- What Google does with it: Google handles the text and photos only on our behalf, under its terms for business customers, and does not use it to train its AI. We have switched off Google's option to keep short-term copies. Only if Google's automatic safety checks flag a request as possibly breaking its rules may Google keep that request for up to 90 days to look into misuse.
- If the cloud is unavailable (no signal, the daily limit is reached, or the service is down), the App answers with the on-device model instead. Nothing is queued or sent later.
We process this data because you chose to turn Cloud AI on (your consent), and to provide and protect the service you asked for. You can withdraw your consent at any time by turning Cloud AI off.
Pronunciation scores (optional)
Pronunciation scores are off by default, work only while Cloud AI is on, and ask for your agreement separately the first time you use them in shadowing. You can turn them off in Settings at any time. When they are on:
- What is sent: the recording of the one line you just shadowed (up to 30 seconds), the line's text and its language. Only English, Japanese and Korean are scored.
- Where it goes: to our server, which passes the recording to Microsoft's Azure speech service (in its Japan East data center) to score it. The scores and the words Azure heard are then passed, as text, to Google Gemini to write your tip.
- What we keep: we don't keep or record the recording, the words heard or the scores. We count only how many lines you scored that day, to apply the daily limit of 150, using the same scrambled purchase code as Cloud AI; the count is deleted automatically within 3 days.
- What Microsoft does with it: Microsoft handles the recording only on our behalf, under its terms for business customers, and does not use it to train its models. We have not turned on Azure's option to log audio.
We process this because you chose to turn pronunciation scores on (your consent). You can withdraw it at any time by turning them off.
iCloud sync (optional)
iCloud sync is off by default. If you turn it on in Settings → Sync to iCloud, your practice history, corrections, saved phrases and app settings are copied to the private storage of your own iCloud account, so they come back on a new iPhone. This is Apple's service, covered by Apple's privacy policy; the data sits in your account, not ours, and we cannot read it. Voice recordings and downloaded models are never synced. You can turn it off in Settings at any time, and manage or delete the iCloud copy in your iPhone's iCloud settings.
Feedback (optional)
If you open Profile → Support → Send feedback and tap Send:
- What is sent: your message, up to three screenshots you choose to attach, your email address only if you type it in, and — as the form shows — your device model, iOS and app version, and your native and practice languages.
- How it travels: to our server, which checks your purchase in the same way as for Cloud AI and limits how many messages can be sent per day, then forwards it to our private support chat on Telegram. Our server doesn't keep a copy.
- How we use it: only to understand and answer your feedback and to improve the App. If you give your email, we use it only to reply to you — never for marketing.
- How long we keep it: in our support chat for as long as we need it to handle your feedback. Email us to have it deleted.
We process this because you choose to send it (your consent).
The Android app
The Android app works the same way as the iPhone app described above, except for the following:
- How we check that you bought the app: requests come with Google Play's record of your purchase. Our server confirms it with Google Play and keeps only a scrambled code made from it, together with that day's usage, deleted within 3 days. We don't keep the purchase record itself.
- Free trial: before you buy, you can try Cloud AI up to a set allowance. So that reinstalling doesn't reset it, the app sends a scrambled code made from the ID that Android gives this app on your device (the Android ID), which can't be turned back into the original. We use it only to count the trial allowance, and delete it 90 days after you last used the trial.
- App integrity check: trial requests also carry a Google Play Integrity verdict, which tells our server the request comes from the genuine app on a real device. Google provides this check.
- No iCloud sync: the Android app keeps everything on your device.
Google Play and Android's system services are covered by Google's privacy policy.
Network use
EdgeLingo connects to the internet to:
- Download AI model files (such as speech and voice packs) from our content servers when they are first needed. This only transfers files to your device.
- Answer Cloud AI requests, only while Cloud AI is on, as described above.
- Score your pronunciation, only while pronunciation scores are on and you shadow a line, as described above.
- Send feedback, only when you tap Send, as described above.
- Sync with your iCloud account, only if you turn on iCloud sync (handled by Apple).
- Check purchases and app integrity with Google Play, on Android, only when you use Cloud AI, pronunciation scores or the free trial.
iOS may also download Apple's on-device speech recognition assets for the languages you practice.
Your rights
Because there are no accounts and we keep only short-lived, scrambled usage records, we generally can't tell which data is yours. You can still contact us to ask about, see or delete any data about you, and you have the right to complain to your local data protection authority. If you sent us feedback, tell us roughly when, and we can find and delete it.
Children's privacy
EdgeLingo is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Third-party components
The App uses open-source AI models that run on your device, under their own licenses; their credits and license texts are inside the App. Cloud AI runs on Google Cloud and pronunciation scores use Microsoft Azure, as described above. Purchases are handled by Apple, or by Google Play on Android. Feedback is delivered to us through Telegram. iCloud sync is provided by Apple.
Changes to this policy
If we update this policy, we will post the revised version here with a new "Last updated" date.
